Wow! The conversation has been fierce. When Amy Chua published her book Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, I am sure she has no idea the controversy she would stir up. You can read the Wall Street Journal Article that started it all here. I think if you really read Amy Chua’s book and listen to her interviews, you will see that she did not intend to say one type of mom is better than another. But lets go a bit further here and take a good look at where Amy Chua is coming from. We all know that how we are parented shapes the parents we become. And, circumstances can be a real driving force. Paige and I look at all of the angles, including how extreme poverty – the likes of which we really don’t have here in the US – can lead parents to demand so much of their children. How is family dinner at your house? If its anything like mine, it is sketchy at best. I’ve been phoning it in for quite awhile, my efforts usurped by crazy after school schedules and VERY diverse food preferences from my family members. I am here to tell you I have been humbled and am vowing to make a difference. The reason? Laurie David and her AWESOME book entitled The Family Dinner. This book is filled with compelling evidence of why the family dinner is critical to your family’s education, development and health. Not to mention it is full of yummy recipes by Kirstin Uhrenholdt and inspiring sidebars from a variety of different celebrities. Need some conversation starters for your table? Check out the Family Dinner Download on the Huffington Post! Paige and I LOVE this book! Special thanks to Laurie David for speaking with us today! And thanks to Mary Ann Hoberman, author of the poem Dinnertime which we quote at the end of our show.
We have 5 signed copies of Laurie’s book to give away. To find out how you can receive a free copy of this book, find MommyCast on Facebook or join us on Twitter at Twitter.com/MommyCast.
